HeyGen and Synthesia are the two best-known AI avatar video platforms. Both let you type a script and get a video of a realistic presenter speaking it. Both offer custom avatars, voice cloning and translation. So which one should you pay for?

The short answer: they're built for different buyers. HeyGen is aimed at creators and marketers; Synthesia is aimed at business training and communication teams. Below we break down pricing, features and limits so you can match the tool to your use.

Pricing checked October 20, 2026 on both official pricing pages. We have not run a long-term hands-on test of both platforms; this comparison is based on official plan details and documentation. Credit-based pricing changes often, so confirm before subscribing.

Quick verdict

  • Pick HeyGen if you're a YouTuber, marketer, coach or small business making social videos, ads, explainers, UGC-style content or translated versions of your videos. It's the more creator-friendly option.
  • Pick Synthesia if you produce training, onboarding, compliance or internal communication videos, especially if you need SCORM, surveys, roleplays or a multilingual player.

Pricing compared

HeyGen

Plan Price Key limits
Free $0 3 videos/month, up to 1 minute, 1 custom video avatar
Creator $29/month ($24 yearly) 600 credits, videos up to 30 min, 1080p, voice cloning, unlimited photo avatars, no watermark
Pro $49/month 1,000 credits, 4K export, faster processing, scalable credit tiers
Business $149/month + $20/seat 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 min, SCORM, LMS integrations, 5 custom avatars

HeyGen uses credits as a single currency across features. Monthly subscribers' unused credits roll over for one more month; annual subscribers' credits accumulate until renewal.

Synthesia

Plan Price Key limits
Basic $0 10 min video/month, 500 credits, watermark, 125+ avatars
Starter $29/month (lower yearly; the site lists $18/month billed yearly) +1,250 credits/month (~12 extra minutes), no watermark, 3 guests
Pro $89/month ($64 yearly) +6,000 credits/month (~60 extra minutes), 5 personal avatars, 180+ avatars
Enterprise Custom 240+ avatars, SCORM, SSO, unlimited personal avatars

Synthesia also moved to a credit model. Every plan includes 10 minutes of video per month; paid plans add credits on top. Synthesia says a typical finished minute uses about 100 credits, and that unused monthly allowance doesn't roll over.

What this means in minutes

  • Synthesia Starter: roughly 22 minutes of video per month in total (10 free + ~12 from credits), by Synthesia's own estimate.
  • Synthesia Pro: roughly 70 minutes per month.
  • HeyGen Creator: videos up to 30 minutes each; actual monthly output depends on which avatar model you use, since credit cost varies by model and length.

If you make a few short videos per month, both are similar in cost. If you make longer or more frequent videos, test how many credits your style of video consumes in each platform before committing to yearly.

Avatars and realism

HeyGen puts a lot of emphasis on expressive avatars. Its plans reference Avatar IV, unlimited photo avatars on paid plans (animate a still image), custom video avatars, and features like motion/gesture control and product placement on higher tiers. That's well suited to marketing content where energy and variety matter.

Synthesia offers 125+ stock avatars on the free and Starter plans, 180+ on Pro and 240+ on Enterprise, plus personal avatars (3 on Starter, 5 on Pro). Its avatars are tuned for a professional, presenter-style look, which fits training and corporate communication.

Realism is subjective and changes with every model update. The honest advice: make the same 30-second script in both free tiers and show it to someone in your audience.

Voice and voice cloning

  • HeyGen: 1,000+ AI voices, voice cloning on the free plan (1 clone) with expanded usage on paid plans, 175+ languages and dialects on Creator and above.
  • Synthesia: 140+ languages and voices, with voice cloning available so you can pair your own voice with your personal avatar.

If you want the most natural narration with a custom voice, many creators generate audio in ElevenLabs and upload it. Both platforms support using your own audio (Synthesia lists voiceover uploads; HeyGen lists audio input). See our best AI voice cloning tools guide.

Translation and dubbing

Both platforms can translate and dub videos with lip-sync:

  • HeyGen offers video translation in 175 languages and dialects on paid plans, with script proofreading on Pro and above. This is popular with creators who want to publish the same video in several languages.
  • Synthesia includes dubbing in 70+ languages on self-serve plans, with voice and accent preservation; lip-sync uses double credits. Its multilingual player lets viewers switch language in one embedded video.

Training and e-learning features

This is where Synthesia pulls ahead. It offers SCORM export, interactive surveys, AI roleplay training, interactive CTAs and branching, bulk personalization, a multilingual player and video embeds that auto-update when you edit. If your output lives in an LMS, Synthesia is purpose-built for it.

HeyGen covers interactive video, SCORM export and LMS integrations too, but on the Business plan ($149/month).

Pros and cons

HeyGen

  • ✅ Creator-friendly, marketing-focused features
  • ✅ Long videos (30 min) on the $29 plan
  • ✅ Unlimited photo avatars, voice cloning, credit rollover
  • ❌ Credit costs vary by model, which makes output harder to predict
  • ❌ Training features locked behind Business

Synthesia

  • ✅ Best-in-class for L&D: SCORM, surveys, roleplays, multilingual player
  • ✅ Generous free allowance (10 minutes/month)
  • ✅ Clear "~100 credits per minute" guideline
  • ❌ Starter adds only ~12 minutes per month on top of the free allowance
  • ❌ More business-oriented; less suited to creator-style content

Alternatives to both

If you don't need an avatar at all, a faceless workflow with stock footage and AI narration may be cheaper and better for your channel. A simple test plan before you pay

Both tools have free tiers, so run a fair test in under an hour:

  1. Write one 45-second script that represents your real content, including a product name, a number and a question.
  2. Make it in HeyGen Free (up to 1 minute) and Synthesia Basic (10 minutes per month) with the most similar avatar style you can find.
  3. Try your own voice in each, either by cloning or uploading an ElevenLabs file, so you're comparing visuals rather than stock voices.
  4. Watch both on a phone, where most viewers will see them, and note lip-sync, hand movement and eye contact.
  5. Check the export: resolution, watermark and how captions look.
  6. Estimate monthly minutes. Multiply your planned videos by their length, then compare that number against Synthesia's ~100 credits per minute guideline and HeyGen's credit usage shown in your account.

Common mistakes when choosing an avatar tool

  • Buying yearly before testing a month. Avatar quality and credit costs change quickly; start monthly, then switch.
  • Underestimating retakes. You'll regenerate scenes to fix pronunciation or pacing; leave headroom in your credits.
  • Using an avatar where a voiceover would do. For list videos, documentaries or tutorials, viewers often prefer B-roll or screen recordings over a talking head.
  • Forgetting disclosure. If an avatar realistically depicts a real person, check platform disclosure rules and make sure you have consent.
  • Ignoring brand consistency. Pick one avatar, one voice and one layout and keep them for a series, as you would with a human presenter.

Both platforms create custom avatars from footage of a real person, so consent and data handling matter. Synthesia highlights SOC 2 and GDPR compliance and applies content moderation to all videos; HeyGen offers enterprise security features such as SSO, MFA and SCIM on higher tiers. Whichever you choose:

  • Only create an avatar of yourself or someone who has given written consent.
  • Read how long your footage and avatar data are stored, and how to delete them.
  • Use two-factor authentication on the account, since it holds a digital likeness of a real person.
  • Keep the original consent records if you make avatars of team members or clients.

Final verdict

For creators, HeyGen is the better default: it's built for social and marketing video, allows long videos on its entry paid plan and includes voice cloning and translation. For companies producing training content, Synthesia is the stronger platform because of its LMS, SCORM and interactive features. Use both free plans with the same script before you decide, because avatar realism is the thing that varies most, and it's the thing your viewers notice first.
