ElevenLabs and Murf AI are two of the most searched AI voice tools, and they are often compared as if they were the same product. They're not. ElevenLabs is a voice-model company first: its strength is how human the voices sound, voice cloning and a huge feature set (dubbing, sound effects, music) sharing one credit pool. Murf AI is a voiceover studio first: its strength is a structured editor where you line up narration with slides, video and timing, plus a developer API.

This guide compares them the way a buyer would: price, voice quality, cloning, workflow, languages and licensing. At the end you'll get a straight recommendation for each type of user.

How we checked: ElevenLabs prices below come from elevenlabs.io/pricing and Murf API prices from murf.ai/pricing, both checked October 20, 2026. Murf's Studio plan prices load dynamically and change with a monthly/yearly toggle, so we describe them generally; always confirm the current price on the official page before you pay.

Quick verdict

  • Choose ElevenLabs if you want the most natural-sounding narration, to clone your own voice, to work in many languages, or the cheapest paid entry point with a commercial licence ($6/month Starter).
  • Choose Murf AI if you mostly produce training videos, explainers or presentations and want a timeline studio where text blocks, pauses, emphasis and visuals sit together, or if you're a developer interested in Murf's low per-character API pricing.

Pricing compared

ElevenLabs pricing (verified)

ElevenLabs uses one shared monthly credit pool across all of its products. For text to speech on its standard multilingual models, one character is roughly one credit, so the credits translate fairly directly into script length. The official plan list:

Plan Monthly price Credits/month Approx. TTS minutes Notable additions
Free $0 10,000 ~10 Text to speech, sound effects, voice design, 3 Studio projects
Starter $6 30,000 ~30 Commercial license, Instant Voice Cloning, Dubbing Studio
Creator $22 (first month $11) 121,000 ~121 Professional Voice Cloning, buy extra credits
Pro $99 600,000 ~600 44.1 kHz PCM via API, 192 kbps audio
Scale $299 1,800,000 ~1,800 3 seats, 3 Professional Voice Clones
Business $990 6,000,000 ~6,000 10 seats, 10 Professional Voice Clones, low-latency TTS

Annual billing costs 10x the monthly price, so you get two months free (for example $5/month on Starter, $18.33/month on Creator). ElevenLabs also says unused credits on paid plans can roll over for up to two months while you stay subscribed, which softens the "use it or lose it" problem for creators with uneven output. Prices exclude taxes.

Murf AI pricing

Murf's pricing page has separate tabs for Studio (the web editor most creators use), API and Dub. On the API tab we could verify:

  • Free trial with $10 of free API credit, no credit card required
  • Falcon model (built for real-time voice agents): $0.01 per 1,000 characters
  • Studio-quality text to speech via API: $0.03 per 1,000 characters
  • Voice changer: $0.10 per minute; translation: $0.02 per 1,000 characters
  • Pay-as-you-go credit that does not expire, plus an Enterprise tier with Professional Voice Cloning, data residency and SLAs

Murf Studio has a free tier and paid plans billed monthly or yearly, with yearly billing noticeably cheaper per month. Those prices are rendered dynamically, so we won't quote a number we couldn't confirm on the official page today. Check murf.ai/pricing for the current Studio price. In our experience the entry Studio plan costs more per month than ElevenLabs' $6 Starter, so for a solo creator on a tight budget ElevenLabs is usually the cheaper way to get a commercial licence.

Pricing winner: ElevenLabs for creators who want a low monthly entry point. Murf for developers who need very cheap per-character API generation.

Voice quality

This is the deciding factor for most buyers, and it's where ElevenLabs earns its reputation. Its newest models (the pricing page now highlights Eleven v4 as its most emotive model) handle pacing, breaths and emotional shifts in a way that sounds like a person reading rather than a system. For storytelling, true crime, history, audiobooks and character dialogue, the difference is audible.

Murf's voices are clean, clear and consistent. They tend to sound like a professional presenter: very good for corporate training, product demos and explainer videos where you want a calm, controlled delivery. They're less convincing when you need raw emotion or a casual, conversational read.

Honest caveat: voice quality is subjective and depends on the specific voice and script. Both tools let you test for free, so generate the same 150-word paragraph in each before you decide.

Voice quality winner: ElevenLabs for expressiveness; Murf is competitive for neutral, professional narration.

Voice cloning

ElevenLabs makes cloning accessible. Instant Voice Cloning (a quick clone from a short sample) starts at the $6 Starter plan, and Professional Voice Cloning (a higher-fidelity model trained on more audio) starts at Creator, $22/month. Higher tiers include more Professional clones. If you want your channel to keep your own voice without recording every episode, this is the main reason to pick ElevenLabs.

On Murf's official pricing page, Professional Voice Cloning appears under the Enterprise offering, which means talking to sales. That's fine for companies, but it puts cloning out of reach for most solo creators.

Cloning winner: ElevenLabs, clearly.

Editing workflow

This is where Murf fights back. Murf Studio is built around a project timeline: you paste a script, it splits into blocks, and you adjust pitch, speed, pauses and emphasis per block while lining narration up with images, slides or video. For an instructional designer turning a deck into a narrated lesson, that structure saves a lot of back-and-forth with a separate video editor.

ElevenLabs has its own Studio for long-form projects (the Free plan includes 3 projects, Starter 20) and is excellent for generating chapters, audiobooks and podcasts. But most YouTubers still export the audio and edit it in their video editor. If that's already your workflow, ElevenLabs fits right in. If you want narration and visuals in one place, Murf is more comfortable.

Workflow winner: Murf for slide/video-synced voiceovers; ElevenLabs for long-form audio and anything you'll edit elsewhere.

Languages, dubbing and extras

ElevenLabs' plan comparison lists 74 languages for text to speech, and its credits also cover speech to text, sound effects, music, voice isolation and dubbing. That breadth is handy if you want to repurpose one video into several languages or add sound design without another subscription.

Murf's site lists 150+ voices across 35+ languages and styles for its API, along with translation and dubbing products. It covers the major markets well, but the overall toolkit is narrower and focused on voiceover.

Extras winner: ElevenLabs.

Licensing and commercial use

Both tools reserve commercial use for paid plans. On ElevenLabs, the Free plan is non-commercial and the Commercial License starts at Starter. On Murf, the free Studio tier is for evaluation; use a paid plan for anything you publish or deliver to clients. If you're buying for a registered company, read each vendor's terms, since licence types can differ by plan.

Who should choose which?

Pick ElevenLabs if you are:

  • A YouTuber running a faceless, storytelling or documentary channel
  • An audiobook, podcast or fiction narrator
  • A creator who wants to clone your own voice affordably
  • Working in multiple languages or planning to dub content
  • On a budget and want commercial rights for $6/month

Pick Murf AI if you are:

  • An instructional designer or L&D team producing training modules
  • Making product demos, explainers or narrated presentations
  • Someone who wants script, timing and visuals in one editor
  • A developer who needs low-cost, high-volume TTS through an API

Our recommendation

For most creators reading this, ElevenLabs is the better buy in 2026. It sounds more natural, its cheapest commercial plan is very affordable, cloning is available without a sales call, and one subscription covers voice, sound effects and dubbing. Start on the Free plan to test voices, move to Starter when you publish, and consider Creator once you want Professional Voice Cloning or produce weekly long-form videos.

Murf AI is a solid, professional tool, and if your work is presentation- or course-style narration it may suit your workflow better. Test its free tier with your real script and check the current Studio pricing before you commit.
