ElevenLabs has become the default answer to "what's the best AI voice generator?" But being popular is not the same as being right for you. This review explains exactly what you get on each plan, how the credit system eats your budget, where ElevenLabs is excellent, and where a cheaper or different tool is the better choice.

All pricing and plan details were verified on the official ElevenLabs pricing page on October 20, 2026. Prices exclude taxes.

Verdict in 30 seconds

Rating: 4.6/5 for creators. ElevenLabs offers the most natural-sounding AI voices available to individual creators, a commercial license from just $6/month, voice cloning on low tiers, and a growing toolkit (dubbing, sound effects, music, speech-to-text) under one credit balance.

Buy it if you narrate YouTube videos, podcasts, audiobooks or Shorts and want voices people won't immediately recognize as AI.

Skip it if you mainly need a drag-and-drop video editor (look at Murf, Pictory or Descript), or if you need perfectly identical output across hundreds of corporate training clips.

What ElevenLabs actually is in 2026

ElevenLabs started as a text-to-speech company and now splits its offering into three areas on its pricing page: ElevenCreative (for creators), ElevenAgents (conversational voice agents) and ElevenAPI (for developers). As a creator, you will use the Creative side, which includes:

  • Text to Speech, the core product, with the Eleven v3 model available on all plans and Eleven v4 announced as its most emotive model
  • Studio, a long-form editor for narration projects (3 projects on Free, 20 on Starter)
  • Voice Library and Voice Design: thousands of shared voices, or describe a voice and generate it
  • Instant and Professional Voice Cloning
  • Dubbing: automatic or in Dubbing Studio
  • Sound Effects, Music, Voice Changer, Voice Isolator, Speech to Text
  • Image & Video generation on paid plans

How credits really work

This is the part most reviews gloss over:

  1. One shared pool. Every product draws from the same credits. Approximate costs from the official FAQ: text-to-speech ~1 credit per character; speech-to-text 330 credits/minute; music 900 credits/minute; sound effects 200 credits per generation; voice changer/isolator 1,000 credits/minute; dubbing 2,000–10,000 credits per minute depending on mode and watermark.
  2. Dubbing is expensive in credits. One minute of Dubbing Studio output without watermark costs 10,000 credits, which is about 10 minutes worth of narration. Plan accordingly.
  3. Regenerations cost credits, though ElevenLabs offers a limited number of free regenerations when the text and settings haven't changed; the interface shows whether a regeneration is free before you click.
  4. Rollover: unused credits roll over for up to two months while you stay subscribed (max 3x monthly quota). Cancel or downgrade and they expire at the end of the cycle.
  5. Faster models can be cheaper: the Flash/Turbo models cost 0.5–1 credit per character via the API.

How much do you need?

A typical 10-minute YouTube voiceover is roughly 1,400–1,600 words, or about 8,000–9,500 characters. Add 30% for retakes and you're near 12,000 credits per video.

  • 1 video/week (≈4/month): ~48,000 credits → Creator ($22) is comfortable; Starter is too small.
  • Shorts only (60-second scripts, ~900 characters each): Starter's 30,000 credits covers ~25 Shorts with retakes.
  • Daily long-form uploads: Pro ($99) or yearly Pro.

Voice quality

ElevenLabs' strength is prosody, the rhythm and intonation of speech. Its voices handle commas, questions, and emotional beats in a way that older TTS engines don't. For storytelling channels, this is the difference between viewers staying and viewers clicking away in the first 30 seconds.

Tips that noticeably improve output:

  • Write for the ear: short sentences, contractions, and punctuation where you'd breathe.
  • Pick a voice whose default style matches your genre (calm documentary vs energetic listicle) instead of trying to force one voice to do everything.
  • Use Studio for long scripts so you can regenerate a single sentence instead of the whole file.
  • Keep a "pronunciation" note for brand names and fix them with phonetic spelling.

Limitations: expressive models occasionally misplace emphasis or change tone mid-paragraph. You'll still need to listen to everything before publishing, and budget retakes.

Voice cloning

  • Instant Voice Cloning (Starter and up): upload a short, clean recording; you get a usable clone within minutes. Good for consistency, not a perfect replica.
  • Professional Voice Cloning (Creator and up): trained on a longer dataset of your voice; the result is much closer and holds up in long narration.

For a creator who wants to stay "the face (voice) of the channel" while saving recording time, Creator at $22/month with PVC is arguably the best value in the whole product. Only clone your own voice or voices you have explicit permission to use.

Dubbing and multilingual content

Text-to-speech supports 74 languages according to the plan comparison. Dubbing Studio (Starter and up) lets you translate a video, edit the transcript, and keep the original speaker's voice. For faceless channels, launching a second-language channel from the same scripts is one of the cheapest growth plays available, but watch the credit cost per dubbed minute.

Licensing

  • Free: no commercial license, so no monetized YouTube, client work or ads. Full details: ElevenLabs free vs paid for YouTube.
  • Starter and above: commercial license, including commercial use of generated music.

ElevenLabs pros and cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class natural voices and emotional range
  • Commercial use from $6/month
  • Voice cloning on cheap tiers
  • Huge voice library + voice design
  • Dubbing, SFX, music and STT in one account
  • Credit rollover on paid plans

Cons

  • Credit math gets confusing once you use several products
  • Dubbing burns credits fast
  • Output can vary between generations
  • Not a full video editor
  • Free plan cannot be used commercially

ElevenLabs alternatives

  • Murf AI – better studio/timeline for slide-based or training videos; Creator from around $20–30/month (check current pricing). See our ElevenLabs vs Murf AI comparison.
  • Descript – best if you record your own voice and want AI cleanup (Studio Sound, filler-word removal) plus AI speech for fixes; Hobbyist from $16/month yearly.
  • Pictory – script-to-video tool that bundles ElevenLabs voices (720 minutes/year on Starter), handy if you want voice and stock visuals together.

A simple ElevenLabs workflow for YouTube

If you're new, this five-step process keeps credit waste low:

  1. Finish the script first. Edit in a doc, read it aloud once, and cut anything you stumble over. Every word you remove after generating costs credits twice.
  2. Shortlist three voices. Use the Voice Library filters (language, accent, use case such as "narration" or "social media") and generate the same two-paragraph test with each. Pick one and stick with it; a consistent voice is part of channel branding.
  3. Generate in Studio, paragraph by paragraph. Long single generations are harder to fix. In Studio you can regenerate only the sentence that sounds off.
  4. Export at the highest quality your plan allows (128 kbps on Starter, 192 kbps on Creator and up) and do final leveling, music and SFX in your video editor.
  5. Track usage weekly. Your remaining credits are on the subscription page in your profile menu. If you consistently finish the month with lots left, rollover covers you; if you run out by week three, upgrade rather than buying ad-hoc top-ups.

Common mistakes

  • Using Free-plan audio in a monetized video (no commercial license).
  • Choosing an overly dramatic voice for a tutorial channel, which tires listeners quickly.
  • Forgetting that dubbing and voice changer draw from the same pool as narration.
  • Cancelling at the end of a heavy month and losing rolled-over credits; downgrade timing matters.

Is ElevenLabs worth it?

For most creators, yes. Start on the free plan to test voices with your own script, then move to Starter ($6) for your first monetized videos. Upgrade to Creator ($22) once you publish weekly long-form or want Professional Voice Cloning. Avoid jumping straight to Pro: the rollover policy means you can absorb busy months on Creator.

Frequently asked questions

Is ElevenLabs free?

+

Yes, there is a free plan with 10,000 credits per month (about 10 minutes of text-to-speech), but it does not include a commercial license. For monetized content you need at least the $6/month Starter plan.

How many minutes do I get on the ElevenLabs Creator plan?

+

The Creator plan ($22/month) includes 121,000 credits, which ElevenLabs estimates at about 121 minutes of text-to-speech with its standard models (pricing page checked October 20, 2026).

Do ElevenLabs credits roll over?

+

On active paid plans, unused credits roll over for up to two months, so your balance can reach up to 3x your monthly quota. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle.
