Cloning your own voice is one of the most useful things you can do with an AI voice tool. You write a script, and the narration comes out in your voice, without booking a quiet room, doing ten takes or re-recording a whole paragraph because you stumbled on one word. For YouTubers, course creators and podcasters, it turns hours of recording into minutes of editing.

ElevenLabs offers two ways to do it: Instant Voice Cloning and Professional Voice Cloning. This guide explains the difference, which plan you need, how to record good training audio, and how to fix a clone that doesn't quite sound like you.

Plan details were checked on the ElevenLabs pricing page, and audio requirements in ElevenLabs' official documentation and help center, on October 21, 2026.

Instant vs Professional Voice Cloning

Instant Voice Cloning Professional Voice Cloning
Audio needed ~1–2 minutes recommended 30 min minimum; 1 hour+ recommended, ideally 2–3 hours
How it works Uses your sample as a reference at generation time Trains a dedicated model on your voice
Time to ready Almost immediate Takes time to train after upload and verification
Accuracy Good, captures the general sound Much closer to your real voice and delivery
Voice verification No Yes, you read lines aloud to confirm it's you
Plan required Starter and up Creator and up

Rule of thumb: use Instant to test whether a cloned voice fits your content. If you'll publish with it regularly, a Professional clone is worth the extra recording time.

Which plan includes what

From the ElevenLabs pricing page (checked October 21, 2026; prices exclude taxes):

Plan Price / month Credits / month Cloning
Free $0 10,000 No cloning, non-commercial only
Starter $6 30,000 Instant Voice Cloning
Creator $22 ($11 first month) 121,000 + 1 Professional Voice Clone
Pro $99 600,000 + 1 Professional Voice Clone, 44.1kHz PCM output via API
Scale $299 1,800,000 3 Professional Voice Clones, 3 seats

Annual billing costs 10× the monthly price, so you get two months free. Generating speech with a clone uses the same credits as any other voice, about 1 credit per character on standard models. For more on credit math, see ElevenLabs pricing explained.

Before you record: what makes a good sample

ElevenLabs is very clear on this: a Professional clone replicates everything it hears, including background noise, room echo and mouth clicks. Instant clones are more forgiving but follow the same rule. Recording quality matters more than anything else.

  • One speaker only. No guests, no crosstalk, no TV in the background.
  • A quiet, non-echoey room. A small room with soft furnishings (a closet full of clothes is a classic) beats a big empty room.
  • A decent microphone, used consistently. A USB condenser or dynamic mic is plenty. Keep the same distance from the mic throughout.
  • Consistent tone and volume. Record in the style you want the clone to speak in. If you want a calm narration voice, don't upload an excited livestream.
  • No long silences. Trim long pauses.
  • No music or effects. Upload raw voice, not your finished edit.
  • Format: ElevenLabs recommends MP3 at 192 kbps or higher. WAV usually doesn't improve quality and can cause upload issues.

How to create an Instant Voice Clone

  1. Record 1–2 minutes of yourself reading a natural script in the style you'll use. ElevenLabs notes that more than 2–3 minutes adds little and can even make the clone less stable.
  2. In ElevenLabs, open Voices and choose to add a new voice, then select Instant Voice Clone.
  3. Upload your sample, give the voice a name, and confirm you have the rights to the voice.
  4. Test it with a paragraph from a real script. Listen on headphones and on a phone speaker.
  5. If it sounds off, try a different 1–2 minute sample before adding more audio. Quality beats quantity.

How to create a Professional Voice Clone

  1. Prepare 30+ minutes of clean audio, ideally one to three hours. The number of files doesn't matter; total runtime does. ElevenLabs suggests splitting multiple hours into roughly 30-minute files for easier upload.
  2. No recordings yet? ElevenLabs lets you record directly in the interface and provides sample scripts for narrative, conversational and advertising styles. Pick the one closest to your content.
  3. Open Voices, add a new voice and choose Professional Voice Clone.
  4. Upload your samples and check the length feedback.
  5. Process the audio if needed. ElevenLabs offers background noise removal and speaker separation per clip.
  6. Verify your voice. You'll be asked to read short lines aloud. Use the same microphone and a similar tone to your samples, and read each line once. If verification fails, you can try again after 24 hours or contact support.
  7. Wait for training, then test the clone on real scripts.

Note that Professional clones don't currently support singing; training audio must be spoken voice only.

Getting the best results from your clone

Once your clone exists, how you prompt it matters as much as how you trained it:

  • Write for the ear. Short sentences, contractions and natural punctuation produce more natural speech.
  • Tune voice settings. Stability and similarity sliders change how expressive or consistent the clone sounds. Our guide to ElevenLabs voice settings explains what each one does.
  • Generate in paragraphs, not whole scripts. It's easier to regenerate one paragraph than a ten-minute file.
  • Keep a pronunciation list for names and brand terms you use often.

Troubleshooting a clone that doesn't sound like you

Problem Likely cause Fix
Echo or "roomy" sound Room reverb in samples Re-record in a smaller, softer room
Hiss or hum Noisy mic or background Use noise removal, or re-record
Too flat Monotone samples Record with the energy you want in the output
Too erratic Inconsistent samples, or too much Instant audio Use more consistent audio; for Instant, try a shorter clean sample
Accent drifts Mixed speaking styles Keep samples in one consistent style and language
  • Clone only your own voice or a voice you have explicit, documented permission to use. Verification on Professional clones exists to enforce this.
  • Commercial use needs a paid plan. The Free plan is non-commercial and doesn't include cloning anyway. Content generated during a paid subscription keeps its commercial license after you cancel. More in ElevenLabs free vs paid.
  • Disclose where required. Follow your platform's rules on synthetic or altered content.

Is cloning your voice worth it?

If you publish regularly with your own voice (YouTube voiceovers, course lessons, podcast intros, audiobooks), yes. A good Professional clone can save hours per week and makes fixing mistakes trivial. If you only need a generic narrator, a stock voice from the ElevenLabs library is cheaper and faster. Our recommendation

Start on Starter with an Instant clone to see whether your cloned voice works for your content. If you'll use it every week, move to Creator, record an hour of clean audio and build a Professional clone. That's where the quality jump happens.

Frequently asked questions

How much audio do I need to clone my voice with ElevenLabs?

+

ElevenLabs recommends 1–2 minutes of clean audio for Instant Voice Cloning (more than 2–3 minutes adds little). For Professional Voice Cloning the bare minimum is 30 minutes, with at least an hour recommended and ideally closer to 2–3 hours, according to ElevenLabs' documentation.

Which ElevenLabs plan do I need for voice cloning?

+

Instant Voice Cloning is included from the Starter plan ($6/month) and Professional Voice Cloning from the Creator plan ($22/month, $11 for the first month), per the ElevenLabs pricing page checked October 21, 2026. The Free plan does not include voice cloning.

Can I clone someone else's voice?

+

Only with their clear permission. Professional Voice Cloning includes a voice verification step in which you read lines aloud so ElevenLabs can confirm the voice belongs to you. Cloning voices without consent breaks ElevenLabs' policies and may be illegal.

Should I upload WAV files for the best clone?

+

Not necessarily. ElevenLabs recommends MP3 at 192 kbps or higher and says uncompressed WAV usually doesn't improve clone quality and can cause upload problems. Recording quality matters far more than the file format.

Can I use my voice clone commercially?

+

Yes, on a paid plan. All paid ElevenLabs plans include a commercial license (excluding Beta services), and content you generate while subscribed keeps that license after you cancel, according to ElevenLabs' help center.
